Welcome to our site
The Mackay Community Garden Inc. was established for the purposes of demonstration, promotion and education of sustainable human settlements based on Permaculture principles. The garden that was lovingly built in Mackay brings together many Permaculture strategies and demonstrates sustainable food growing methods and plant choices which best suit our tropical region.
The Community Garden is also a creative space to meet like-minded members of the community for sharing community building activities and ideas and for pondering the notions of the global movement that is encouraging the public to think and act at the local level. That movement is Transition Towns.
The core team have a presence in the garden on Thursdays and Fridays between 8.30 am till 2.30 pm or so and Saturday mornings from 9.00 till roughly 1.00 pm. We can get into a bit of gardening or chat about gardening, the plants and their uses and other permaculture topics such as the Transition Town movement. We assist members and the general public with any questions relevant to gardening and sustainable living. We occasionally hold workshops on Permaculture concepts which include topics such as; Basic Home Food Gardening, Patterns in Nature, Introduction to Permaculture, Composting, etc. We now offer the 72 hour Permaculture Design Certificate course.
We make ourselves available to conduct tours around our site. We also assist land holders (large and small) with site planning and project development.
Please contact us for further details and bookings for tours.
We do our best to live life in a fashion where we immerse ourselves in a learning environment based on Permaculture principles to allow our wholistic understanding of sustainability.
We also pop up at different markets in the region, Wintermoon, The Farleigh Palm Fete, EcoMackayExpo, Greenmount Heritage Fair and the Food & Wine Festival with lots of plants, ideas, tips and inspiration.
